| Technical Questions |
1. Why is WinPaste designed to store rich text and HTML data only?
The WinPaste is designed to store only text (with its rich text formatting information) and HTML data. Any bitmaps within the rich text and HTML data are stored as well. It is not intended to be used for copying images, folders, files, icons or shortcuts.
Our experience suggests that most users do not revisit images, folders or files previously copied to clipboard for the sake of pasting them multiple times. For us, not having the images, files or shortcuts cached in our application keeps things simple, reduces clutter and improves performance.
2. Why does WinPaste sometimes just stop capturing clipboard updates for no reason?
In order to receive notification of clipboard events, WinPaste registers itself as a viewer part of a Clipboard Viewer chain. Any other running application may do the same and each one of these viewers has the responsibility to pass the notification event it receives to the next viewer in the chain. Unfortunately, this means that one badly written application may sever this chain by failing to deliver the clipboard notification it receives to its partner in the chain. This results in WinPaste (and some other apps registered as clipboard viewers) being cut off from receiving clipboard updates.
The cure is to take note of other applications running as clipboard viewers (examples - chat applications, other clipboard utilities, download managers, ftp clients and Microsoft Office clipboard) and close them if possible or disable their "clipboard watch" option. Then, restart WinPaste to help register itself as a member of clipboard viewer chain again and start receiving clipboard updates.
3. Why is the "smart" paste function not working for me?
A few applications may fail to respond to automatic paste feature in WinPaste. To paste the WinPaste selection into your application, select the clip in WinPaste, press OK to minimize/hide WinPaste. Now, activate the application in question and perform an extra menu action 'Edit→Paste' or a Ctrl+V.
The same extra procedure applies when for some reason, WinPaste fails to do an automatic quick paste in an application.
4. Where did my WinPaste system tray icon disappear in Windows XP?
Windows has a feature called 'Hide inactive icons' to put in the background what it considers to be 'inactive' or unused system tray icons. To see the WinPaste icon in the system tray, click on the little left arrow button near the system tray (called the notification area).
To display the WinPaste icon permanently, right mouse click on the windows task bar and select 'Properties'. Keep the 'Hide inactive icons' checked and click on 'Customize...' button next to this check box. From the list of icons displayed, find WinPaste and choose 'Always show' in the Behavior column of the list.
