Batting: Punjab

Over No.Event TypeEventTeam Score
0.2FOURNehra to Vohra, FOUR, bad line that - down leg and all it needed was a glance. Vohra did that, beating fine leg easily. The first boundary of the game5/0
1FOURNehra to Sehwag, FOUR, thumped! Cracking sound as the ball met bat. Short and wide outside off, Sehwag stood tall and punched it ferociously. Once he played it in the gap, it was always a boundary. 10 off the first over and Punjab are off to flier10/0
3FOURMohit Sharma to Sehwag, FOUR, Mohit Sharma looks shell-shocked after the ball flew out of Sehwag's willow. Can't bowl short and wide to this man - he absolutely belts the square cut and Raina at sweeper cover was a mere bystander19/0
3.1SIXI Pandey to Vohra, SIX, finally he nails one! Short and outside off, instead of rocking back, he presses his left-leg forward and then pulls off the front foot over wide long-on. Just about carried all the way over the ropes. Is that the shot that kickstarts Vohra's innings tonight?25/0
3.3FOURI Pandey to Sehwag, FOUR, fine late-cut. A wide slip was there and close to him was a gully. He had to be extra careful not to play it to either of them. Instead he opens the face of the bat very late and glides it in the air - but between the two men there and gets a great boundary32/0
3.4FOURI Pandey to Sehwag, FOUR, this one is a false shot, but Sehwag won't mind the eventual result. Four it is. Looks to flick over the on-side, but the ball flies off the leading edge to the deep backward point fence. That's two fours in a row for Sehwag. Pandey getting a pasting this over so far36/0
4SIXI Pandey to Vohra, SIX, that's a huge six to end a very big over. Again a front foot pull. How good is this fella with those shots? Too good one must say. Knows the length will be short and then goes ahead with the shot, the ball flies over long-on. Mahendra Singh Dhoni looks a worried man. First over for Pandey - just one, 2nd - 24 off it. How about taking the bowler to the cleaners43/0
4.1FOURNehra to Sehwag, FOUR, even Nehra likes it! He is standing there with a wry smile on his face, looking at Sehwag. Length on off, driven wide of mid-off, in the air, but well wide of the fielder. The ball just raced away off the fast outfield. More of this treatment and I'm sure Nehra won't be smiling47/0
4.2FOURNehra to Sehwag, FOUR, now Nehra isn't smiling. I said so. Half-volley and that is like showing a red rag to a raging bull. Sehwag stands there and lets his hands do the rest. Over cover and before you could spell Sehwag, the ball had whistled to the deep cover fence. The 50 is up as well in very quick time51/0
4.3FOURNehra to Sehwag, FOUR, make that three in a row. Width from Nehra and Sehwag won't miss out. Beats short third to his right with a delectable late dab, though the fielder dived, he couldn't stop it. The expression changes on Nehra and Mahendra Singh Dhoni's face. What will Nehra do now? Sehwag is like a fast train at the moment55/0
5.2SIXMohit Sharma to Sehwag, SIX, all the way. Short and on the stumps, Sehwag backed away and then slashed with all his might. The white ball just about cleared the ropes over Mahendra Singh Dhoni's head. Could tonight be his night? Hope this isn't a jinx. He really is looking in great nick. Worrying signs for Chennai.65/0
6.1SIXAshwin to Sehwag, SIX, what a welcome to Ashwin. First ball and he has gone for a biggie. Half-volley outside off, Sehwag kneels on one leg and then blasts it way over long-on. That should set the alarm bells ringing. Will Ashwin come back?76/0
6.5OTHERAshwin to Sehwag, 1 run, Sehwag is a big game player. I had said before the game started, tonight could be his night and so far he has treated the capacity crowd to some ballistic hitting. That's his fifty as well - just opens the face of the bat and guides it wide of point, to get there. No big celebrations - just raises his bat and gets on with it. That shows he is aiming for a much bigger score. Bad news for Chennai and great news for Punjab. A 21-ball fifty too.80/0
7.3SIXRavindra Jadeja to Sehwag, SIX, Sehwag is on fire. He clears his left-leg and then goes over long-on. Got the length he needed to get under the ball and he gave it an almighty whack. He may be wearing glasses now, but nothing wrong with his eyesight - as good as ever88/0
9.1FOURRavindra Jadeja to Sehwag, FOUR, even the luck is with Sehwag now. Looks to slash and gets a thick outside edge that runs away to the third man fence. Bad start to the over102/0
9.2FOURRavindra Jadeja to Sehwag, FOUR, two in a row. Sehwag is hanging on the back foot, waits for the short delivery and pulls it hard and one-bounce over the ropes at deep midwicket. Ravindra Jadeja needs to be much fuller106/0
10.4OUTI Pandey to Vohra, out Caught by Raina at midwicket!! Dharmasena is asking Vohra to wait. They want to check for the no-ball. Pandey is fine. He is not even close to overstepping there. Good catch by Raina - if there was one man in the Chennai side who you would bet on to be under that skier, it has to be Raina. Vohra replicates his dismissal from the previous game. He was out in a very similar way to Morne Morkel - trying to pull off the front foot and gets it high on the bat. Raina called for the skier and held on after he ran to his right. Extreme composure and great hands from one of the safest fielders in the team. Vohra c Raina b I Pandey 34(31) [4s-1 6s-2]110/1
11.1SIXNehra to Sehwag, SIX, Sehwag is liking this stuff from his Delhi team-mate. Even Maxwell likes it. A punch off the glove from the Victorian and then pats Sehwag on the helmet. This is a great shot. Nehra followed Sehwag as he made room, yet the batsman went through with the lofted hit, through the line and the ball lands on the straight boundary. Mahendra Singh Dhoni looks worried117/1
11.2SIXNehra to Sehwag, SIX, what is Sehwag on tonight? Now the short delivery has been flat-batted over long-on. Once it hit the bat, everyone knew it was a six. The timing on the shot was incredible for the white ball flew and flew. Still Nehra continues from round the wicket. Change of angle Nehra? For now he is going to bowl from around. Hat-trick of sixes coming?123/1
11.5FOURNehra to Maxwell, FOUR, no-one in the deep in the midwicket region and Maxwell has flicked it over midwicket inside the ring. An easy boundary. For Maxwell, Nehra is bowling from over the wicket. It doesn't matter as the over has gone for 18 so far. Not Nehra's night so far129/1
12.1SIXAshwin to Sehwag, SIX, Sehwag is on a rampage! Down the track and to the pitch, before lofting Ashwin straight back over his head. The ball hits the sightscreen on the full. Forget Maxwell, it is Sehwag who is belting Ashwin. Ashwin needs to change his tactics. Sehwag held the pose too after playing the stroke138/1
12.5SIXAshwin to Maxwell, SIX, the leggie from Ashwin and it doesn't matter at all to Maxwell. He just goes through the with the lofted hit, clean strike and the white ball goes way over long-on. Beautiful strike and Ashwin has been belted. Can he rein in Maxwell? This battle gets interesting. I'm sure Maxwell won't back down148/1
13OUTAshwin to Maxwell, out Caught by Raina!! Ashwin sends Maxwell off with a blown kiss. This is interesting. First I will explain what happened immediately after the wicket. As soon as Maxwell holed out to deep midwicket, Ashwin began his send-off, blowing a kiss and sending Maxwell off. The batsman didn't like it at all, he complained to the ump on the field and the 4th ump on the way back to the dugout. This was bowled differently, slower and held up on the pitch, Maxwell - as I said, didn't back down and slogged, but no timing and found Raina. Mahendra Singh Dhoni too didn't like it Ashwin's send-off, he was seen shaking his head and having a word. Ashwin, to his credit, must be said, apologised immediately to the ump for that celebration. Phew, the pace is frightening and it is difficult to keep up with all that is happening. Maxwell c Raina b Ashwin 13(6) [4s-1 6s-1]148/2
14FOURRavindra Jadeja to Sehwag, FOUR, that has been belted away to the deep cover boundary. Even the dive from Raina isn't enough. That was creamed off the front foot and it slicked off the turf, Raina put in his best effort and couldn't stop it157/2
14.1FOURAshwin to D Miller, FOUR, worst bowling! Down leg and with short fine inside the ring, it was a delivery begging to be hit. Miller sweeps it away past that man161/2
14.2FOURAshwin to D Miller, FOUR, even worse bowling! From over the wicket this time and still it is down leg, no chance for Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Ashwin has lost it and it is hurting Chennai. I'm sure his captain won't be too impressed165/2
15.4OTHERI Pandey to Sehwag, 1 run, there it is! I had warned earlier - before the game, it could be Sehwag's night. My hunch has proved right. Every season he has got one big score, this season he hadn't till tonight. Now he gets there. Look at the reaction. He is punching the air in delight. Raises his arms in triumph. A huge smile to go with it. The 2nd 100 of his Indian T20 League career. And what a 100 it has been. Gets there with a drilled drive that is half-stopped by the bowler. The ball rolls to short cover and as soon as the single is half-run, Sehwag starts celebrating. The Wankhede are on their feet. A ballistic, brilliant, belligerent ton. One of his very best and in such a big game - cometh the hour, cometh the man! The man is Sehwag and he has put Chennai to the sword here!171/2
16FOURI Pandey to Sehwag, FOUR, the carnage continues! Low full toss on off, Sehwag makes room and slices it over point. Third man had no chance. The fun goes on176/2
16.1FOURMohit Sharma to D Miller, FOUR, and the boundaries flow. Full and outside off, crashed wide of cover. The ball went to the boundary in an instant. No-one moved a muscle. No-one, I tell you180/2
16.4SIXMohit Sharma to D Miller, SIX, the sixes are coming! Flat hit into the Punjab camp. Low full toss on middle, Miller crouched low and generated sensational timing on that shot, somehow blasted it into the second tier. Now it's the turn of Miller to wreak havoc. Mahendra Singh Dhoni doesn't know what has hit his team188/2
16.5FOURMohit Sharma to D Miller, FOUR, Mahendra Singh Dhoni claps, while Miller wears a wry smile on his face after that went off the toe-end and to the fence. Low full toss outside off, Miller opened the face and got it just wide of the Chennai skip, maybe MS should've dived. He didn't and it went away to the fence, the bowler can't believe it and has a sheepish smile, MS encourages his bowler, by clapping192/2
17.2SIXRavindra Jadeja to Sehwag, SIX, Sehwag keeps going and going. No end to the fun! Gets under the ball and sends it soaring over long-on. Everyone just watched the ball sail into the crowd. Can't do anything when this man is batting like this. Bowl and pray perhaps?200/2
17.3FOURRavindra Jadeja to Sehwag, FOUR, now the outside edge has gone to the third man fence. A slog and the thick edge races away. Nothing going right for Chennai and Mahendra Singh Dhoni204/2
17.4SIXRavindra Jadeja to Sehwag, SIX, Jeez! Mahendra Singh Dhoni runs up to Ravindra Jadeja to have an arm around the bowler's shoulder. What can he possibly tell him? Another six. Another clean strike. Another big hit. Can keep adding another, another and another. This is madness. This is insane. I'm becoming crazy. Can't quite describe this batting. Off the highest order. Stand and deliver and the ball sails over long-on. Ravindra Jadeja doesn't know what has hit him, he needs his captain to console him and offer advice. Will the advice work? I'm sure there is a silent prayer from Jadeja as he comes in to bowl. What will he try now?210/2
18.1OUTNehra to Sehwag, out Caught by du Plessis!! The Sehwag show has come to an end. Look at the send-off given. Each and every Chennai player walk up to him and shake his hand. That's the effect of his innings - simply mind-blowing. Preity Zinta is screaming her lungs out. The Punjab dugout stand up as one and pat him on the head. What an ovation too from the crowd. Amidst all this, one shouldn't forget the catch - it was a good one, for the fielder was coming from sweeper coveer, that must have distracted Faf, but he kept his nerve even as he tumbled to ground after catching it two-handed. Nehra must be thanking is lucky stars, for the full toss got a wicket. Sehwag was down the track and was aiming over cover, but got it high on the bat. End of one of the all-time great innings in the Indian T20 League. Sehwag c du Plessis b Nehra 122(58) [4s-12 6s-8]211/3
18.2FOURNehra to D Miller, FOUR, low full toss, dragged down to deep midwicket, in the gap and it's a boundary. Miller taking it on now. The boundaries just don't stop coming215/3
19OUTNehra to Bailey, out Bowled!! Mahendra Singh Dhoni claps that wicket. High full toss, Bailey's eyes lit up, but he swung too early and missed. The ball clattered into the stumps. Bailey walks off with a smile - why won't he smile, for he knows that his side is in an almost impregnable position. But then one has gotten used to seeing Bailey smile all the time, nothing unusual about that. Bailey b Nehra 1(2)218/4
19.2SIXMohit Sharma to W Saha, SIX, length and Saha has some fun. In the arc for the swing for deep square leg and he doesn't miss out. Got under the length to pull/swing across and bashes it over the fielder. The fielder was placed for the catch, but he could only watch the ball sail over his head225/4
19.3OUTMohit Sharma to W Saha, out D Miller Run Out!! Mahendra Singh Dhoni hits direct to catch a diving Miller short. Saha looked to swing a slower delivery out of the ground and missed, they wanted to steal a quick bye and MS was too alert and too sharp to that possibility. An under-arm flick and the ball hits timber. D Miller run out (Dhoni) 38(19) [4s-5 6s-1]225/5
20OUTMohit Sharma to W Saha, out Caught by Dwayne Smith!! The final delivery produces a wicket. Saha completely mistiming the pull off a back-of-the-hand slower delivery, Smith runs in from deep square and takes the catch. Punjab finish on 226. W Saha c Dwayne Smith b Mohit Sharma 6(4) [6s-1]226/6

Batting: Chennai

0.2OUTJohnson to du Plessis, out Caught by Bailey!! Gone! Bailey and Punjab have dismissed du Plessis for a golden duck. Not the length to be pulling - hurried onto him very quickly and went off the shoulder of the blade. The ball lobbed in the air and Bailey who was at mid-on, ran back, kept his eyes on the skier and caught it with both hands. Calm catch under pressure. Can't blame du Plessis for that, the target is so high, he needed to go from ball 1. Johnson is pumped, runs towards his Aussie mate to celebrate. Great short delivery too, very quick and right on the money. du Plessis c Bailey b Johnson 0(1)1/1
0.4FOURJohnson to Raina, FOUR, that's fast. Rapid from Johnson. 150kph from Johnson. On the ribs - but down leg, Raina feathered the glance past the diving Saha. Who had no chance to get there. Have seen Haddin pull off some stunners down leg, but even he wouldn't have got there. Saha did a Haddin, went with the same technique, sideways leap, but the ball was flying and not within his reach6/1
1.1FOURSandeep Sharma to Raina, FOUR, on one knee and over mid-off. Though it was swinging, and away from outside off, Raina lofted it beautifully over the fielder. Sandeep Sharma shouldn't mind this too much, for it gives him a chance13/1
1.2FOURSandeep Sharma to Raina, FOUR, much better shot. Full and on off, right in the slot and Raina lofts it with much better timing. Had made room and got it right off the middle of the bat. Sandeep Sharma is under pressure. But how long can Raina continue to bat like this. Something's gotta give soon17/1
1.4SIXSandeep Sharma to Raina, SIX, lovely hitting from Raina, Sandeep Sharma pitched this one up and on Raina's pads, he gets forward and swings through the line, the ball sails over the square leg fence and into the 2nd tier23/1
1.5FOURSandeep Sharma to Raina, FOUR, Sandeep Sharma goes full and on off, Raina gets forward, meets the ball on top of the bounce and sends it screaming past cover point for another boundary27/1
2.4FOURAwana to Raina, FOUR, this is good calculative hitting from Raina, anticipates that Awana was going short, gets inside the line and pulls it over short fine for another boundary32/1
2.5FOURAwana to Raina, FOUR, beautifully played, Raina shimmies down the track, converts the ball into a half-volley and goes inside out over extra cover for another boundary36/1
3.3FOURJohnson to Raina, FOUR, Raina continues to bat positively, this was pitched up and on a length around middle and leg, Raina prods forward, uses the bottom hand to good effect and heaves it in front of mid-wicket for a boundary43/1
3.4SIXJohnson to Raina, SIX, massive, length ball from Johnson, Raina gets forward, manages to get underneath the ball and drills it high and over wide long on for a maximum. Chennai have started positively49/1
4SIXJohnson to Raina, SIX, cracking shot, fraction too short from Johnson, Raina is quick to rock back and pulls it high and over backward square leg for a maximum, 20 runs from the over. Raina is doing a Yusuf Pathan here, Chennai need more of such hitting though56/1
4.2SIXSandeep Sharma to Raina, SIX, Raina raises his fifty in style, and he looks pumped up. This is the 2nd fastest fifty in Indian T20 League history, just behind Yusuf Pathan. This was full and on off, Raina made room by backing away, opens the face of the bat at the last moment and goes high and over extra cover for a maximum, 23rd fifty as well64/1
5OUTSandeep Sharma to Dwayne Smith, out Bowled!! Cleaned up! The out-of-sorts Smith falls. A cracking inswinger, pitched up and shaped back in slightly, Smith was looking to go over mid-on, the ball grazes the inside edge and the middle pole is knocked out. Sandeep Sharma exults in delight, much needed wicket for Punjab. Dwayne Smith b Sandeep Sharma 7(11)67/2
5.1SIXAwana to Raina, SIX, Raina is batting in a different planet though, this was short and on the stumps, Raina was hanging back doesn't get this off the middle of the bat but has enough to clear the ropes at backward square leg73/2
5.2SIXAwana to Raina, SIX, lovely shot, the shot of the match? Definitely comes close enough, this was pitched up and on off, Raina presents the full face of the bat, high elbow on that as the ball goes sailing over long on for a maximum79/2
5.3FOURAwana to Raina, FOUR, add another four to the score, Awana goes full and on the stumps, Raina shuffles across, uses the pace on the ball and clips it behind square for a boundary83/2
5.4FOURAwana to Raina, FOUR, Raina is running away with this one now, Punjab must somehow find a way to stop the runs from being leaked. This was an ungainly slog, full and just outside off, Raina gets down on his knee and gets an inside edge on the slog, beats square leg and races away to the fence87/2
5.5FOURAwana to Raina, no ball, FOUR, Awana has been completely rattled here, a high full toss, and well outside off, Raina plays with an open face and finds the gap behind point for a boundary, called no-ball for height92/2
5.5FOURAwana to Raina, FOUR, another boundary, and even the Chennai dug-out are up and cheering, this was full and on off, Raina gets forward and lifts it high and over mid-on for another boundary96/2
6FOURAwana to Raina, FOUR, 33 runs from the over, the 100 is up as well even as the batting PP ends, this was full and on Raina's pads, whipped away behind square for another boundary100/2
6.1OUTKaranveer Singh to Brendon McCullum, out Raina Run Out!! Is this the defining moment of the match? Stunning bit of fielding from Bailey, and the Punjab skipper has found the inspiration in himself. This was tossed up and on off, McCullum pushed it to the left of cover point and set off. Raina responded but then both batsmen stopped mid-way, McCullum kept running though and Raina had to rush towards the striker's end. Bailey gets across to his left, swivels across and makes a direct hit at the striker's end, all in one motion. Raina dives, but can't beat the throw. Raina run out (Bailey) 87(25) [4s-12 6s-6]100/3
8.2FOURKaranveer Singh to Ravindra Jadeja, FOUR, poor ball from Singh, drifts one full and well outside leg, all Jadeja had to do was get some bat on that, he does so and the ball races away to the fence112/3
8.5DROPPEDKaranveer Singh to Ravindra Jadeja, 1 run, that is a tough chance, more like Karanveer Singh saved a boundary there, this was tossed up and on off, Jadeja drilled it to the right of the bowler. Singh dived, and only managed to get his finger-tips on that115/3
10.2SIXKaranveer Singh to Ravindra Jadeja, SIX, much needed blow from RJ, shimmies down the track, converts it into a full toss and hammers it back over the bowler's head, sails all the way for a maximum129/3
10.4FOURKaranveer Singh to Ravindra Jadeja, FOUR, Miller went for the catch and concedes a boundary, this was flighted and on off, Jadeja was looking to hoick it with the spin, ends up dragging it towards long on. Miller came rushing in, dives forward but the ball bounces over his head for a boundary133/3
12OUTA Patel to Brendon McCullum, out Brendon McCullum Run Out!! 1 run completed. Poor running from McCullum. This was tossed up and on off, McCullum pressed forward and drove it towards extra cover. Maxwell fumbled with the ball, RJ saw the chance for the second run, McCullum was sauntering along, the throw from the deep was excellent, Saha collects the ball and throws down the stumps with McCullum well short. Even the dive couldn't save Baz, his casualness costing him big time. Brendon McCullum run out (Maxwell/W Saha) 11(16)140/4
12.1OUTAwana to Ravindra Jadeja, out Caught by Johnson!! Jadeja falls now, Chennai are in some trouble. This was full and well outside off, Jadeja was dancing down the track, was looking to go over cover, the bat turned in his hands and he ended up slicing it towards sweeper cover. Johnson came running across, goes down on his knees and takes a good low catch. The umpires wanted to check for the catch, it was very clean, they then went for the no-ball. Awana was fine on that count as well, Jadeja has to walk back to the hut. Ravindra Jadeja c Johnson b Awana 27(21) [4s-2 6s-1]140/5
12.5OUTAwana to David Hussey, out Caught by Sehwag!! Sehwag's day has just got better, 2nd wicket of the over. Soft dismissal for Hussey, this was short and angling into the right-hander, he was cramped for room on the pull and only manages a weak shot towards mid-wicket. Sehwag will not drop those, Awana gets his second wicket, good comeback after conceding 33 runs in his second over. David Hussey c Sehwag b Awana 1(3)142/6
15.2SIXJohnson to Dhoni, SIX, Woah! That must be the shot of the match. And this after Sehwag and Raina's heroics. A tennis shot and how good a shot it was. Short and with pace from Johnson, around off, rising too and what does Dhoni do? He employs a forehand smash, flat-batted over long-off for a six. How much power is packed in those wrists? Dynamite batting and a devastating hit from MS! That was a jaw-dropping stroke. See it to believe it. Words can't describe or do justice to it161/6
16.5OUTA Patel to Ashwin, out Stumped!! All over. Gave the charge too early and the bowler fired it well outside off, the batsman missed, but Saha didn't. Ashwin st W Saha b A Patel 10(11)167/7
18.3FOURA Patel to Dhoni, FOUR, flat-batted powerful pull wide of the flying Miller at long-on. He leathered that. But all too late?177/7
18.4SIXA Patel to Dhoni, SIX, still the match is just about alive. Just about. Dhoni comes down the track and connects one, launches it way over long-off. Got under the length nicely that time183/7
19FOURA Patel to Dhoni, byes, FOUR, Saha misses the take. Fired down leg, beats Dhoni's big hit and escapes Saha's grasp. It went between the bat and the body of Mahendra Singh Dhoni which must have unsighted the keeper187/7
19.3FOURAwana to Dhoni, FOUR, slashed down to third man. Right off the toe-end and down to the fence. Mahendra Singh Dhoni has a look at his willow after playing that. All over bar the shouting now192/7
19.5FOURAwana to Dhoni, FOUR, heaved wide of the deep midwicket fielder. The dive didn't help him. Just one more ball to go196/7
20SIXAwana to Dhoni, SIX, it's a six, but it's Punjab who win! Bailey is all smiles. Sehwag is on the field, he is hugged by Bailey. Preity Zinta can be heard saying - "Oh my god", lots of hugs in the Punjab camp. Bailey wants to hug Sehwag one more time and the hero of tonight obliges. Coming back to the last delivery - a high full toss was belted miles into the stands at wide long-on - reminiscent of Dhoni's winning hit in the 2011 World Cup final here at the Wankhede. But this time in a losing cause. Maybe he just vented all his frustration on that poor white cherry.202/7
