Recent changes to Sumanasa.com

Posted on June 20th, 2008 in General by Sumanasa.com Team

Our news website has a new look and feel, which should be pleasing to new visitors and regular visitors alike.

Also added NDTVKhabar, Pratahkal, Business Standard and Mahanagar times to Hindi news pages. Good to see many big media players adding regional flavor to their news websites.

Also added Top Stories section to India News. The Google news like format enables our visitors to quickly glance at top news stories and go in-depth if its important.

Filter news headlines based on updated time

Posted on December 2nd, 2007 in General by Sumanasa.com Team

Last week we rolled out a new feature that allows our users to filter news on any page based on the time period (<4 hours, 4-8 hours, 8-12 hours and >=12 hours) it was updated on the news source website. We believe that this feature improves usability of our website to a great extent. Colour-coding allows visitors to easily distinguish old news from the new ones. Frequent visitors can quickly glance through the page and read the most recent news and ignore the rest.

Google Ads

Posted on August 30th, 2007 in General by Sumanasa.com Team

We have now increased the number of google ads that are being displayed on a page. The ads blend very well with the content and may not annoy the user much.

It may not be a good thing for our users, but we need to increase our revenue as well. This additional money is required to add new features to Sumanasa.com. As always, our aim is to attract more users and retain existing users.

New Look for Sumanasa.com

Posted on April 5th, 2007 in General by Sumanasa.com Team

We are very excited about completing the rollout of new design for our website.

Hindi news is now separated into unicode and non-unicode sources. Unicode is displayed in text (legible only on IE at this point in time) whereas non-unicode remain as image rollovers. A couple of bugs still exist and will be fixed as soon as possible.

As always, our effort has been to deliver high quality products and make users’ life easy. We welcome your suggestions and comments.

Using RSS Feeds

Posted on January 18th, 2007 in General by Sumanasa.com Team

Switched to RSS feeds (instead of html pages) as source of news headlines for a few news sources for the first time in the 6-year history of Sumanasa.com. Although RSS feeds are more structured source of news headlines, we still prefer crawling HTML pages for the following reasons:

  • Many Indian websites still don’t provide RSS feeds.
  • RSS feeds may not be updated as frequently and as quickly as their HTML counterparts.
  • Headlines in RSS feeds are sometimes sorted on date and time rather than by their importance.
  • Not all headlines are listed in RSS feeds.
